11 Simple Rules Writing Literature Review – Examples Templates

Writing Literature Review – Writing a literature review is an art as well as Science. Literature review writing is an art because it needs creativity, style, and a variety of patterns to write an amazing literature review.

It is also a Science because literature review writing needs a thorough evolutional understanding of the topic.

Researcher write literature review generally for two purposes-

Literature Review Research Paper

Writing a literature review for a research paper needs a detailed understanding of the topic and writes it in the way as we write a story.

At the end of the paper write the overall conclusion of the literature review in a single paragraph.

Below various templates are given to make you understand how to write literature reviews. Follow all the templates as you feel like

Literature Review for Thesis

Follow these simple steps to write a great literature review-

  1. Decide a topic for which you want to write a literature review
  2. Find the main keywords from the topic for example if the topic is-

Design and develop a model to optimize opinion mining on shopping websites using social media networks

In this title, two keywords are there – opinion mining and social media networks

  1. Use these two keywords and find pdf files present on the internet. Try to find out research papers listed in SCOPUS.
  2. In the pdf files, you will find research papers. Store all the papers in a separate folder to read later.
  3. Now make the following table comprising the following columns-

Name of the author or authors – In this column write name s of authors or author

Year of paper- Year on which the paper is published

What – In this column write what is researched by the author

How – What method, technique, or algorithm is used by the author

Findings – What kind of result the author found at the end of the paper

Future work – Future work suggested by the author

  1. Read one by one all the research papers you collected in the folder
  2. Store relevant detail in the table
  3. If you are doing Ph.D., your target must be 100 plus papers minimum.
  4. If you are making a synopsis your target must be for 50 papers approximately
  5. After completing the table now you need to write a literature review in the textural form.
  6. Before writing the literature review write a paragraph comprising 5 to 10 statements about the title in the following form-

12 Start writing a literature review in the same way as we narrate stories.

Writing a literature review example

Writing a Literature Review Example 1

This chapter/paper discusses the research being done in the field of Intelligent traffic Management system by various authors. Various methods used by the scientists in the standard scheme were analyzed and discussed in this chapter/section/paper.

You can straightway translate the table in the textual form as mentioned below-

Researchers x and y carried out a study on Opinion Mining….(write your title of the thesis) They used deep learning and neural network technique on the data that was collected from social networks particularly Twitter and concludes that 60% of people speak positively about the AMAZONE. Only 15% of people give negative comments about the site while the rest of the percentage of people said their statements were found ambiguous. [author1, author 2 and author 3]

Writing a Literature Review Example 2

A study was carried out to describe the future trends of data mining applications and data mining patterns. In this study, Kriegel et al. emphasized the future store of different complex types of data that need more preprocessing of data before discovering the complex patterns and also specify that future patterns will be more complex with mutual relationships and more valuable [35].

Writing a Literature Review Example 3

A study undertaken by Nazareth et al. proposed that the Pearson correlation coefficient can be used to identify attributes interdependencies to discuss the mutual relationships among item sets [36].

Writing a Literature Review Example 4

Author 1, author 2, and author 3 [38] proposed multidimensional association rules and used it as a preprocessing method to reduce the mining time and generate only interesting rules, and avoiding useless uninteresting rules. Instead of enforcing the constraints researcher extract the rules which have common attributes and assign these sets of rules to a common class name and avoid the association rules having uncommon attributes.

Writing a Literature Review Example 5

Liu et al. discovered high utility items from the transaction database which is organized in multiple levels of abstractions. They used a two-phase algorithm. In the application of market basket analysis mostly frequent patterns are discovered to make the strategy for increasing the sales. Sometimes infrequent patterns are also very important to improve the profit as infrequent patterns specify the sale from the rich class only. Considering the same concept researchers constructed the table for high utility items sets and discovered high utility patterns to improve the profit [41].

Writing a Literature Review Example 6

In another study cross-level, frequent patterns mining technique was used to give suggestions to e-learners and helping them in learning more effectively from web-based materials [42].

Writing a Literature Review Example 7

Shaw et al. and Prakash et al. proposed diversity and peculiarity to measure the rule interestingness. Diversity measures the distance between two items within a rule, based on their position in the hierarchy. Peculiarity determines the distance between the two rules. The further away the rule is the more peculiar the rule. These peculiar rules are generated from the outlying data and hence few in number. The study concludes that these two measures are important for discovering useful patterns [43, 44].

Writing a Literature Review Example 8

Guider et al. discovered frequent multilevel patterns under the user input constraints. Researchers proposed two algorithms. One algorithm discovers the rules and tests the interestingness of the rules by the user given constraints and another algorithm removed the uninteresting rules [45].

Writing a Literature Review Example 9

Shaharanee et al. combined data mining and statistical techniques such as chi-square, regression analysis, and hypothesis testing and provide some control to minimize the risk of discovering uninteresting rules and patterns from transaction database [46].

Writing a Literature Review Example 10

Han et al. developed a group of algorithms to mine interesting rules from the transaction database and conclude that different algorithms may have the best performance for a different distribution of data [31].

Writing a Literature Review Example 11

Bhasin et al. used apriori algorithm to find multi-level association rules from the transaction database to increase the sale and profit of items [57].

In the box, brackets give the reference number that you will mention at the end of the review paper or the thesis.

There are various other ways to write a Literature Review. If you are able to categorize your domain in different categories then categorize it and write literature review category-wise.

Another way is to write the literature review year wise. Start from the research conducted the first time in this domain and then mention the work done in the next years.
