Research Paper Writing – How to write a research paper

Before writing a research paper first need to decide what type of research paper you want to write. A research paper can be of three types-

  • Article
  • Review Paper
  • Research Paper

How to write a research paper – Article

Article

Article means writing four to five pages about a topic. Generally, if you are a student of graduation, post-graduation, or going to write a paper first time for a journal or a conference, it is better to write an article. Because writing an article is easiest as compare to review paper and research paper.

How to write an article for a conference or a journal

To write an article first finds a topic of your interest. If you are a student of Computer Science, the topic can be as follows-

For example if you have an interest in data mining, and you want to write an article on data mining, first of all, read about data mining as much as possible.

Read all the possible sources you have about data mining. These sources may be books, journals, and online material, existing research papers on data mining, etc.

After a detailed study on data mining, write an outline of a research paper. Outlines of an article are as follows-

To structure a research paper (article) organize the paper under the following headings-

 Title

Write the title of the paper. The title must be effective and must speak the whole story that you are going to write in your paper.

Abstract

The Abstract tells about the complete theme of the article. Abstract tells what you are going to write in your coming text. Complete abstract withing 10 to 15 statements or in a paragraph. The abstract of an article must not exceed half of the page.

You can read a sample of abstract – Real-Time Sentiment Analysis Towards Machine Learning

Introduction

In this section write about the main terms used in the title. If your title is – Real-Time Sentiment Analysis Towards Machine Learning.

In the introduction give the meaning of sentiment analysis, machine learning, and also describe what is real-time sentiment analysis in detail.

In general complete this introduction section within one to two pages. But there is not a hard and fast rule about the length of the introduction.

You can adjust its length according to the need of the terms used in the title.

Literature Survey

If you are writing an article, give a small description of the literature survey also. In this section how the main term used in the title is derived. Who first time mention the term.

How various scientists work on this term. Write a brief description of what has been done to date on the topic.

This is the section that helps to increase the length of the paper. Accordingly, you can increase and decrease the length of the literature survey section.

Generally, for an article two pages of a literature survey are enough.

Limitation

This section gives some lines about the limitation of the existing work. What is left that must be done on the topic. Give your feedback about the literature survey in three to five lines or more.

Conclusion and Future work

In the end, conclude the article. Write what you have written in the paper in two to five lines. Also, write what else can be done in the future on this topic. That’s it.

How to write a research paper – Review Paper

Review Paper

The second category is the review paper. Review paper can be of various types as discussed below-

  • Review of a book.
  • Reviews of various papers written by someone on a specific topic.

  • Review of a book

To write a review of a book, read the book of which you want to write the review. Write a brief description of each chapter (approximate half-page description is enough for each chapter).

This review must be a critical review. You must mention the good points and limitations of the chapter. Also, mention what else must be there in the chapter.

To write a review of a book outlines are as follows-

  • Review on a topic/Review of various papers written by scientists and researchers on a specific topic.

These review papers are generally written by the researchers who are doing a PhD or any other kind of research.

If you want to write a review paper, write a detailed critical review of the papers written by other researchers on a particular topic.

While doing critical review write answers the following questions in brief almost in one or two lines, and writes a short paragraph.

  1. What is the study?

(Sample Answer.  A study is conducted by the x —- in the year —– on the data mining technique)

  1. Why this study is done by the researcher?

(Sample Answer. The researcher did this study to develop a new and better algorithm of data mining.)

  1. What technique, methodology or algorithm is used by the researcher or scientist?

(Sample Answer. In this study the scientist used an association rule mining algorithm in order to mine the data of 1000 farmers.)

  1. What is the conclusion of the study?

(Sample Answer. The researcher concluded that the association rule mining gives better results than any other algorithms)

  1. What is the limitation of the study?

(Sample Answer. The study has a limitation that the scientist applied this data on a very small sample of 1000 farmers only. The sample of the data should be large to check the validity of the algorithm)

Note- These questions and answers are for sample only. You can write similar kinds of statements while writing the review of papers.

Hence, approximately five to seven statements are enough while reviewing the study.

In this way write the review of important research studies or research papers in your paper about the topic you interested in.

While doing a review paper write the review in order. This order may be year wise or the order may be according to some particular technique or both. It all depends on your interest.

At the end of the review, the paper writes technical gaps in the whole review work. Technical gaps mean what is researched up till now and what should be researched according to the need of the present time.

Also, write a paragraph about the future work that can be done in the future to make this work more authentic and fruitful for the current time scenario.

In conclusion, the section concludes your whole review paper in a paragraph. In this paragraph mention what you have reviewed, why you have reviewed, and what can be done in the future about the work.

Outlines for review paper are as follows-

How to write a research paper – Research Paper

Research papers are written generally by the research students who are doing dissertation work for graduation, post-graduation, or Ph.D.

These papers are full flashed research papers that are written after deep study on a specific topic.

The outlines are given below to write a research paper. In the research paper, the most emphasis is given on the research work what you have done and implemented.

In the research paper, a literature survey may be given in the short, and the proposed work is given in detail.

You can write your complete research in detail and in the short, it is up to you. Write the methodology, technique or algorithm that you implemented in your research.

Generally, if you implemented three or four techniques or algorithms in your research, write research paper on a single technique or algorithm. For each and every technique or algorithm write a separate paper.
